The Social NineThe Glue
SO9 · classical name “Participation”Countertype
The Social Nine is the countertype Nine: the Enneagram Nine whose tendency to forget themselves is aimed at the group, so they merge with the team by working hard for it and holding it together, and look far more energetic and involved than a Nine is expected to be.
This is the Nine who never stops. Where the Stoic settles into routine and the Twin merges with one person, the Glue merges with the whole group and does whatever it needs: the extra hours, the mediation, the unglamorous work that keeps everyone together. They look like a hard-working Three or a helpful Two, and underneath they have forgotten themselves as completely as any Nine.
What drives the Social Nine
The Nine’s sloth toward the self and its merging with the outside, aimed at the social instinct (belonging, standing, the group), produce a person whose place is earned by participation. Naranjo called this subtype exactly that. The Glue works for the group so that they never have to notice that they do not know what they want for themselves, and the busyness is the sleep.
How it shows up at work
- The hardest worker on the team and the least likely to say what they personally want from it.
- Mediates, harmonizes, fills the gaps; the person who makes the team function and gets no credit.
- Cheerful, involved and generous with time; can seem like a natural leader.
- Sacrifices their own priorities for the group’s so consistently that nobody knows they had any.
- Struggles to rest; stopping would mean facing the self they have been too busy to consult.
Under pressure
Below the line, the Glue disappears into the group. The work becomes a way of not existing, the harmonizing becomes an inability to take a side, and the self-sacrifice becomes a slow resentment that has no voice because they never named a want to begin with. They can burn out while everyone thinks they are fine, and they can hold a team together so well that it never learns to hold itself.
What the pattern is protecting
The fear of being unimportant and of the conflict that asserting a self would cause, and beneath it the Nine’s conviction that they do not really matter. Working for the group protects them from ever having to find out whether they would be wanted without the work.
The growth edge
The edge for the Glue is taking up space. In practice: state a personal position on a divided issue, decline a task the group could do without them, and spend an hour on something that serves only themselves. The Glue grows when they discover that the team survives their absence and wants their opinion.
Questions about the Social Nine
The Social Nine (SO9) is the countertype Nine. Its tendency to forget itself is aimed at the group, so it merges with the team by working hard for it and holding it together, and looks far more energetic and involved than a Nine is expected to be. Naranjo called the subtype “participation.”
Because it runs against the Nine’s slow, easygoing grain. Where the other Nines withdraw into comfort or into one relationship, the Social Nine throws itself into the group’s work and looks busy, driven and involved. The self-forgetting is the same; the surface is the opposite.
The Social Nine works hard for the group and holds it together. The Self-Preservation Nine merges with routine and comfort. The One-to-One Nine merges with one important person. The Social Nine is the most energetic and the least Nine-like of the three.
