The Social SixThe Deputy
SO6 · classical name “Duty”
The Social Six is the Enneagram Six whose need for safety is aimed at the group, so they handle fear by following the rules, trusting the system and doing their duty, and they are the most precise and framework-loyal of the three Sixes.
This is the Six who believes in the institution. Where the Ally finds safety in people and the Defier finds it in courage, the Deputy finds it in the code: the process, the policy, the authority that has earned the right to be followed. They are dutiful, reliable and clear-thinking, and they can be rigid in the same way, and for the same reason, as a One.
What drives the Social Six
The Six’s fear and doubt, aimed at the social instinct (belonging, standing, the group), produce a person who manages uncertainty by locating a trustworthy framework and adhering to it. Naranjo called this subtype “duty.” The Deputy’s safety comes from knowing the rules, following them, and being part of something larger and more stable than themselves.
How it shows up at work
- Knows the process and follows it; uncomfortable when others improvise.
- Precise, organized and reliable; the person who reads the policy before the meeting.
- Loyal to a leader or institution that has earned it, and critical, behind closed doors, of one that has not.
- Thinks in terms of what is correct and permitted; can seem cold or bureaucratic.
- Prepares for the worst and calls it planning, which it usually is.
Under pressure
Below the line, the Deputy becomes the rulebook. Judgment gives way to procedure, doubt hides inside compliance, and anyone who deviates from the framework becomes a threat rather than a colleague. They can become rigid, critical and authoritarian in a polite register, enforcing a system they privately doubt because the doubt is more frightening than the rigidity.
What the pattern is protecting
The fear of being exposed and alone without the structure, and beneath it the Six’s conviction that they cannot trust their own judgment. The framework decides so they do not have to. Duty protects them from the terror of an open question.
The growth edge
The edge for the Deputy is trusting a person, including themselves, over a rule. In practice: make a judgment call where the policy is silent, question an authority they respect, and notice when precision is anxiety in a suit. The Deputy grows when they discover that the structure was never what kept them safe.
Questions about the Social Six
The Social Six (SO6) is the Enneagram Six whose need for safety is aimed at the group. They handle fear by following the rules, trusting the system and doing their duty. They are the most precise and framework-loyal of the three Sixes. Naranjo called the subtype “duty.”
Because both follow rules, value precision and can be rigid. The difference is the motive: the One follows the rules because they are right, the Social Six follows them because they are safe. Underneath the Six’s compliance is doubt, not conviction.
The Social Six handles fear through rules and the group. The Self-Preservation Six handles it through warmth and alliances. The One-to-One Six goes toward the fear and looks bold. The Social Six is the most structured and the most dutiful of the three.
