The Social OneThe Exemplar
SO1 · classical name “Rigidity”
The Social One is the Enneagram One whose drive to be right is aimed at the group, so they become the example of the correct way and hold the standard for everyone else with calm, unbending certainty.
This is the One who teaches. Not always in a classroom, but in every meeting: the way things ought to be done, said and decided. Where the Steward corrects themselves and the Crusader corrects you, the Exemplar sets the bar and stands on it, expecting the rest of the room to rise. The anger is cool, principled and rarely raised.
What drives the Social One
The One’s anger and its conviction that there is a right way, aimed at the social instinct (belonging, standing, the shared code of the group), produce a person whose place in the world is to be the standard. They win belonging by being the most correct, and they hold others to the same code. Naranjo called this subtype “rigidity,” which is not stubbornness for its own sake but the refusal to bend on principle.
How it shows up at work
- The keeper of the process, the policy and the right way to phrase the email.
- Argues from principle, calmly, and finds it genuinely hard to see why a rule would ever be bent.
- A natural mentor and teacher; also the person others feel judged by, even when nothing was said.
- Superior competence delivered with a slightly superior tone that they do not hear.
- Rarely loses their temper; disapproval arrives as a lowered voice and a longer pause.
Under pressure
Below the line, the Exemplar becomes rigid and remote. The standard hardens into dogma, feedback becomes correction, and the group starts to feel graded. They can be right in every particular and still lose the room, because the coolness reads as contempt. Anger stays underground and leaks out sideways as sarcasm, impatience with “sloppiness,” and a growing sense of being the only adult present.
What the pattern is protecting
The fear of being wrong in front of others, and beneath it the One’s conviction that they are only acceptable when they are good. The social instinct raises the stakes: being seen to be wrong feels like losing one’s place. Rigidity is the armor against ever being exposed as imperfect in public.
The growth edge
The edge for the Exemplar is warmth over correctness. In practice: state what they feel before what they think is right, let someone else lead a process they would do better, and notice when “high standards” is really the fear of being seen to fail. The Exemplar grows when they discover that people follow them for who they are, not for the standard they enforce.
Questions about the Social One
The Social One (SO1) is the Enneagram One whose drive to be right is aimed at the group. They become the model of the correct way: teaching, setting standards and holding others to them with cool certainty rather than heat.
Naranjo named this subtype for its refusal to bend on principle. The Social One wins belonging by being the most correct, so compromising a standard feels like losing their place. The rigidity is the point, not a side effect.
The Social One models and teaches the right way. The Self-Preservation One worries and self-corrects, mostly in private. The One-to-One One reforms people and ideals with visible heat. The Social One is the coolest and most principled of the three.
